Sports clubs are a great way of getting more out of your time at Warwick, and there are various ways of using the squash club to enhance your uni life. This page offers a basic introduction into the ways you can best use the squash club to your advantage. Check the rest of the website for more info, or get in touch with a member of the exec. The best way to find out about how the club works though is to get involved!
First things first, you'll need to join the club. This requires membership of WarwickSport. As with most sports clubs at Warwick, it's a fairly nominal additional fee for a year of club membership. Once that's all sorted you'll be ready to get involved!
Team squash is great fun. We run three men's and a women's team at Warwick. We play against other universities as well as local clubs, and will usually have a couple of fixtures each week. Once involved in the squad you'll be able to join discounted Friday training sessions with your teammates. Trials will be run in week one, but if you miss or can't make these just contact a member of the exec and we'll make sure we give you the chance to show what you can do! Even if you don't make the teams, but are keen to improve, come along and support the club at home fixtures. It's a great way to see how competitive games are played, and team members are always happy to chat and give some advice if you have technical questions about the game.
Unless you're a world-ranked player, it's more than likely you'll be able to find players of a similar standard to yours at our bi-weekly club nights. Every Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 o'clock we have courts one to four set aside for members. A member of the exec will be present to introduce everyone and help organise some games for you. We also provide equipment to anyone who needs it. Club nights are as competitive or relaxed as you like, and are pretty sociable, so come along and get started. Even if it's your first game of squash we'll guide you towards the light.
The squash club run great socials throughout the year. These often revolve around Pop!, but we also hold socials around Leamington, at Kasbah and have the occasional curry and BBQ too. Club tournaments are often accompanied by socials, alongside other events. This year we're arranging a world record attempt for the longest ever squash match!
Pop! socials when held are on Wednesdays from seven o'clock (sharp!), where all the sports clubs 'circle' in the Copper Rooms. As a club we gather round a large table, chat and play drinking games. There is usually a fancy dress theme, and you'll get the chance to watch everyone make fools out of themselves and find out which male members of the exec switch to VKs come 9.30. There are £1 pints, and you'll most likely be unsteady by the end of it, but we're a very relaxed club. We'll explain all the rules to the games and you can take it as hard or easy as you like - you don't even have to drink to participate. Anyone is welcome anytime throughout the year, and people are encouraged to bring along friends and housemates. It's just really good fun.
The club run tournaments throughout the year. As a member of the club you can enter the members tournaments. We also travel to graded tournaments at other clubs. These allow you to play competitive squash and to enter the lower grades you only need a basic grasp of the game. Whether you're a squad player or not, these tournaments provide a great chance to rub shoulders with some quality players, and are usually accompanied by an excellent night out.
The club ladder allows members to arrange games with each other. It works like any other ladder, and among other things offers you the chance to challenge team players and put yourself in the frame for squad selection throughout the year.
The club offers discounted training for its members. We have a top national coach and you can develop your game through our coaching programme and meet players of similar ambition. Check the 'Training' page for more info.
